This species has a proportionately larger head when compared to the other species, sometimes reaching 9 inches (25 cm). It is the most common nesting sea turtle found on the continental beaches of Brazil, and it is commonly called the "mixed turtle."
Its shell is brown and yellow, and is around 1 meter long. Loggerhead turtles commonly weigh nearly 330 pounds (150 kilos), although some individuals can reach 550 pounds (250 kilos).

Their main sources of food include: fish, shrimp, mollusks, and some types of sea grasses. Their powerful jaws are particularly adept at crushing the thick shells of mollusks. Loggerhead nests are found on almost all beaches from northern Rio de Janeiro to Sergipe.
