This is the only species that eats exclusively sea grasses. In Brazil, it is also called Arună, and is greenish and brown in colour. Its carapace reaches about 4 feet long (1.20 meters), and it weighs on average 550 pounds (250 kilos) and may reach 770 pounds (350 kilos).

This species can be found in the waters along the whole coast of Brazil, but in terms of nesting, it prefers almost exclusively the beaches of the oceanic islands such as Fernando de Noronha, Atol das Rocas, and Trindade.
